Bioinformatics Internship

Second Genome, Inc., an innovative venture-­backed start-­up in the Bay Area, is leveraging the microbiome to develop personalized medicine solutions. We are accepting applications from internship candidates for the summer of 2012 with a strong blend of scientific understanding, the desire to experience a start-up corporate environment, and a record of meaningful accomplishments.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Compiling polished client data analysis reports in partnership with the bioinformatics team
  • Organizing data, metadata, figures, legends, and method descriptions
  • Optimizing the report-building process
  • Posting client reports and data to their private area on the Second Genome website

Internship Requirements:

  • Undergraduate status or Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences, Computer Sciences or related field
  • Commitment of 40 hours per week for at least three months
  • Strong organizational and proofreading skills
  • Skilled at data interpretation
  • Experience meeting both individual and team goals
  • Love for startup culture and a quest to innovate
  • A strong desire to develop new ways to overcome challenges and hurdles
  • Ability to work closely as a member of the bioinformatics team
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

Preferred: 

  • Coursework in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Statistics
  • Conversant in microbiome research
  • Knowledge and experience in gut biology, inflammation, immune response, or related fields
  • Experience in computer programming
  • Web site editing experience using a Content Management System such as WordPress
  • SQL experience

  • This is an unpaid internship position
  • Will work with team in San Bruno, CA office
