The gene coding for 16s rRNA, a component of the bacterial ribosome (shown here) contains highly variable regions that can provide species-specific signature sequences useful for bacterial identification.

Second Genome’s Microbiome Modulation Discovery platform enables assessment of small molecules, natural products, bacterial strains, and biologics for microbiome altering effects.

The platform is based, in part, on state of the art 16S rRNA metagenomic profiling assays and proprietary bioinformatics pipelines which allow monitoring of whole microbiome community changes in biological specimens, such as feces, tissue, and swabs. This robust platform is operated with standardized controls and reproducible protocols.
