The Platform

The gene coding for 16s rRNA, a component of the bacterial ribosome (shown here) contains highly variable regions that can provide species-specific signature sequences useful for bacterial identification.
Second Genome’s Microbiome Signature Discovery™ platform is based in part on the unique and proprietary PhyloChip™ assay and Second Genome’s informatics pipeline. The PhyloChip assay is a hybridization-based method that identifies and measures the relative abundance of more than 50,000 microbial taxa. The assay leverages 1.1 million probes targeting the 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequence. The highly parallel and reproducible nature of the assay allows tracking community dynamics over time and treatment, making it a unique technology for applications such as microbial biomarker discovery and validation.
The Second Genome Microbial Signature Discovery platform is operated with standardized and reproducible protocols, and is integrated with Second Genome’s informatics pipeline for data interpretation and signature identification.
