Unlocking The Promise of the Microbiome >

Second Genome is developing microbiome-based signatures to select and optimize care for patients with gut health disorders. Gastrointestinal disorders impact a large and growing patient population, and a significant need exists for personalized approaches to diagnosis and treatment.

Over the last decade, the microbiome, defined as the trillions of bacteria in and on our bodies that contribute to both disease and wellness, has been implicated in a critical role in a wide range of diseases. These include:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis
  • Diarrheal disorders
Current clinical measures such as endoscopy provide a coarse view of the individual’s gut status and existing molecular markers, such as c-reactive protein, measure very general indicators of inflammatory response. Higher resolution, microbial biomarkers will enable improved disease classification, refined individualized treatment strategies and better monitoring of remission status and likelihood of relapse.

The Second Genome Approach

Second Genome has developed a sensitive, flexible and robust platform for the identification of microbiome-based signatures for the rapid identification of microbial gut health biomarkers.  This Microbiome Signature Discovery™ platform is based in part on the unique and proprietary PhyloChip™ assay and Second Genome’s informatics pipeline. The platform was  developed over the last 8 years and reflects the impact of significant investment to date. The capabilities have been demonstrated in a wide range of publications in peer-reviewed literature.
